Yorkshire - Our 700 Mile Bus Trip Thru The North Country

Rievaultx Abbey ruins

Thursday morning early we boarded 3 buses at the FSU Study Center. We would spend the next 3 days on the Yorkshire District in general and York in particular. Our hotel for 2 nights was in downtown York - the walled Medieval city. The weather was in the 60s and 70s - with some periods of rain on Saturday.

Friday afternoon we arrived in Yorke - we visited the York Minster - the largest Gothic cathedral in Europe. Lulu and I also visited the National Train Museum. We ate at a public meeting house - like a palace - that had a private Italian restaurant in it. We also shopped in the narrow streets inside this walled city.

Saturday we headed to the coast. On the way we stopped at Abbey Rievaultx - a monastery from the 1200s. It was in ruins but preserved for exploring.

We spent the rest of Saturday in Whitby - a quaint shore town and harbor. Everyone wanted to enjoy the food - the cold beach water - the boats - and the Whitby Abbey up on the cliffs - also in ruins.

We spent both Friday and Saturday night in an Ibis Hotel - a budget hotel with tiny room - and a nice breakfast.

Sunday morning Lulu and I walked the top of the walls at York. You can circle the city about 40 feet above the houses and traffic. Then our bus left to go back to London.

On the way home we stopped at Chatsworth House - an exclusive country home owned by the Cavendish Family since 1650. It has been voted the top country estate many years in a row. During World War II - many women were borught here. They traded service of the farms for safety from the bombings in London. Chatsworth would remind you of Downton Abbey - the TV show. The Chatworth owners would make their fortune by leasing out land to farms - mines - etc.

Although we had a little rain - it was a great trip. The buses were excellent - the hotel adequate - and lots of nice places to eat. The FSU students were a lot of fun. It was nice being able to relax in the bus and watch the country go by.
