A Saturday Visit To The London Transport Museum

Two old double decker buses.
They would make great motor homes.
Low bridge everybody down.
Solid rubber tires - yikes
My grandson loves buses - trains - trucks - planes - and cars. So I thought a visit to the Transport Museum was in order. We walked from our apartment to Convent Gardens. Admission for Lulu and I was 15 pounds - not bad when you consider that it is a full year pass.

The museum covers the history of the subway - bus - train - and taxi traffic in London. London is a city of 8 million people and getting around is a major undertaking. If you choose to drive your car here - there is a daily congestion fee of 15 pounds. It makes you think twice about owning a car in town. If you choose an electric car - they waive that daily fee.

In the 1950s - London had a very serious air pollution problem. The smoke from brown coal fireplaces - and cars and trains - made a pea soup smog that killed people. Today - the coal fires are banned - the chimneys and fireplaces plugged. Buses are burning natural gas - electricity - and now even hydrogen fuel. Subways are completely electric.

I really like riding the bus and Tube. A single ride cost 1.5 pounds. When you use the Oyster transportation card - it limits your cost to 7 pounds a day. We took a taxi home after the museum - and it was 9 euros. It is a much nicer door to door ride - instead of hauling the stroller up and down the Tube. Of course the bus and subway are flat rates - while the taxi is more for long rides. Sometimes when you are exhausted - the taxi is really a great refuge.

The Apple Store is in Covent Garden Square by TheTransport Museum. There are lots of street entertainers in that square. If you saw the movie - A Streetcat Named Bob - this is where he used to hang out and entertain.

Horse drawn rail trolley.

Trains cars used to have compartments.
