China Day 21 of 160 - The National Library and The Military Museum

Lulu taught her first class Tuesday - she loved it.

This little Everhart started his first day of school in Paris

We had the national library to ourselves

We got out of bed Wednesdays morning light. We were enjoying Lulu's first day of class on Tuesday and dicussing how much fun it was. Ironically - our grandson in Paris was having his first official day of school. He is 3 and that is mandatory school age there. Two Everharts - bookends on their educations.

After a nice lunch in the apartment - we took the 15 cent bus to the China National Library Museum. We love to look at libraries even if we can't read anything. The crowd was very light - we got to see a series of books - dating back 3000 years.

Next a quick 45 cent subway took us to the Military Museum Station. This museum reminds one of several of the Smithsonian Museum's buildings wrapped into one. The rooms are gigantic - giving one the feeling of smallness of the people and largeness of the state. You could tell that normally there are large crowds here - and it will be that way in two week. Oct 1 to 7 - is the Golden Week - they will celebrate Modern China's 70th birthday then. But right now - guards outnumbered tourists.

It is against the law to own a gun or a knife in China. Lulu bought a cooking cleaver in IKEA and had to show ID to register it. A few months ago I bought a Glock in Florida with cash - and no registration. In China - she had to register a meat cleaver. So I was really surprised to see the rooms full of long guns - hand guns - and swords.

We did not even scratch the surface of the military museum. Admission was free but we had to show our passports to get tickets. Since it was free and my legs were tired - we stopped for food - and headed back to the apartment thru rush hour. We took bus 21 - again for 15 cents - and in 12 stops were were at  our apartment.

It was a really nice day - two great museums - that we will no doubt visit again. They will be great places to take our 4 sets of guests.

Millions of books and not one for us to read
