The Buddy Holly Show at the Civic Center in Tallahassee - Tuesday Night - from our seats.
One of the nice things about living in a little city is that it is small enough to get around - but big enough to have plenty of places to eat and things to do. Tallahassee has 186,000 people. With 3 colleges here and the Capitol - this regional city can support some pretty neat things.
While Lulu was away last week - I bought tickets to see the Buddy Holly Story. We saw it in England - but I figured what the heck - it is only going to be 2 miles from our door. The tickets were not cheap - $60 each - for good seats. Usually I do not do "surprises" because in one breath Lulu says surprise me - and then when I do - she usually does not like my taste.
I told her yesterday about the tickets. She had a lunch scheduled today with the Dean - but that would be early. When Lulu woke up this morning she felt terrible. She thought she had strep throat. You know Lulu is sick when she cancels a lunch date with the boss. In the 10 years we are in town - she has not used one sick day. Today - she just laid around the house.
This afternoon I took her to the doctor - they did a throat culture on her - and it was not strep - it was a sinus infection. They gave her meds and she bravely went to the show with me.
The Buddy Holly Show just finished a 22 year run in London. We saw it there. So I thought it would be fun to see it in the Civic Center - where we watch all the FSU basketball games. People complain about the acoustics there - but this show was not bad. It was not a very big crowd - we left home at 7:10 and were easily in our seats for the 7:30 start.
Here is my story when we saw The Buddy Holly Story in England -
The play followed Buddy's short 18 month career - which was a real roller coaster ride. Buddy's group - The Crickets - broke up mainly because the other members wanted to remain in Lubbock - Texas and buddy wanted to locate in New York City. Buddy met Maria Elena Santiago at a NYC record company and proposed to her within 5 hours. She was pregnant when Buddy died in a plane crash in Iowa on a rock and roll tour.
The show reviewed most of his hits - ending in one final show in Clear Lake - Iowa. When Lulu traveled all over the USA on her Vision Tour in 2010 - she visited the Field of Dreams site from the baseball movie in Iowa. Little did she know - she drove within 3 miles of the spot where Buddy crashed. A makeshift memorial is there.
Many musicians today say that Buddy Holly was the biggest influence on their careers. The Beatles named their group after The Crickets. They covered "Words of Love" a Holly tune. The Rolling Stones covered "Not Fade Away." Paul McCartney bought the Buddy Holly song book and still owns all those wonderful tunes. An English group "The Hollies" were supposedly named after him. Rolling Stone magazine named him number 14 in the Top 100 greatest rock and roll performers. He is a charter member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The show lasted almost 3 hours - we were home at 10:30 - and Lulu went to bed to care for her sinus infection. I typed this.
The day the music died.
