Adventures in the Air
Just imagine a two year old, a one year old, two bulky car seats, three suitcases, one carry-on and four personal items with a mother and a grandmother. Oh wait, lets throw into that mix, a plane delay of almost two hours. Do you know what happens when a plane is delayed and you had already planned the little ones snacks and naptimes by the time the plane was leaving? Well Ill tell you - complete meltdown!
Yes, this is how my adventure began this past Monday. All of the above boarding a plane at the Tampa airport bound for Allentown, Pa. My daughter, her two children and I were traveling to see family in Pennsylvania. My mother hasnt been in the best of health and we wanted to go home and surprise her. Little did we know just what an adventure we faced.
The first problem was that the airline would not allow us to check in one of the children on-line. When we arrived at the airport looking like we were moving for a year, the airline representative informed us that it was a full flight and we could not sit together, even though we had purchased seats for each of the children so they could ride in their car seats. My daughter and the youngest one would be in row 31 and Jax and Grammy would be in row 36.
We boarded the plane only to be told that the car seats couldnt be rolled through the aisles so we had to pick them up and carry them to the rear of the plane. The stewardesses grabbed the children to help us and also stowed our large carry-on bag under the plane. After the 15 minutes it took to install the car seats, we had the children in, carry-on bags under the seats and others boarded.
Now, let me add here that the airline did not put us on the side with only two seats, no, they decided to cram someone else in with us as well. On top of that, the two year old and I were seated in an aisle with a view of nothing but a big blue engine and that was it. You literally could not see out the window. If the man in front of me would have lifted his window shade, Jax would be able to see out, but the man refused. Sure, why make it easier for Grammy?
As the flight took off, the little one was melting down as it was way past her naptime. I could hear her yodeling at the top of her lungs so Im sure the person sitting next to my daughter was thrilled. Thankfully once we were in the air and leveled off, Addy drifted off to sleep. Jax, who was beyond tired, did not sleep at all. He was very good until the last thirty minutes when he wanted out. Oh, we did take a lot of games, coloring books, etc. for him however the seats were so tight that there was no way to even bend down to get the items out of the bag.
The young man next to me was so nice and was upset with the older gentleman who would not let Jax look out of his window. Then it happened, the bathroom issues. Jax had to go potty! Of course he did! Picture this, one obese woman and a squirmy two-year-old trying to get into the tiniest bathroom in the world and then trying to perfect aim into a toilet that scared him to death. Oh the fun!
The worst issue was about 30 minutes till landing and my daughter looked back at me and told me that Addy had a huge mess in her pants that included going through her clothes. The stewardess took my daughter to the back bathroom but someone had the one with a changing table tied up forever. The stewardesses on Allegiant flight #888 were wonderful. They helped her to make a bed over the toilet so she could change her, but Addy was so scared and hysterical that on top of the diarrhea pants, she started vomiting - oh the joys of motherhood.
Finally, all was over and we landed. We waited to be the last ones off the plane and once again, the stewardesses were fantastic. They helped us gather everything and while we did, one took Jax to the cockpit to sit with the pilot who Jax says, Drove the plane with a really big key!
We drove to my moms and surprised her, actually, she passed out and hit the floor when she saw my daughter and the kids. Jax says now that his Mommy pushed Nana down. We are happy to be here in Pennsylvania with family, but I cant help to think that next Monday, there will be a two year old, a one year old, two bulky car seats, three suitcases, one carry-on and four personal items with a mother and a grandmother boarding a plane in Allentown bound for Tampa. Please keep us in your prayers. Seriously!
