Tallahassee Electricity - Is It Worth Going Solar?

In Tallahassee you only can buy electricity from the city. They charge roughly 12 cents a kilowatt hour.

Since we both heat and cool with electricity using a heat pump - our bills are higher in the summer and winter. In the fall and spring they drop a bit.

Our bill includes the cost of heating a hot tub all year long - and also charging our electric car in the garage.

We have had our home evaluated for installation of a whole home solar system. Usually the contractor says we do not use enough electricity to justify the pay back. It would take over 15 years to pay for the system - even if the system covered our entire monthly bill.

After tax rebates - a system with full backup battery - would cost us about $25,000. If I would instead put that money in a bank account - the interest would almost pay our entire monthly bill.

Although our home is about 4000 square feet - since we used thick foam insulation - special windows - thicks walls - our electric bills are low. If we used much more power - we could justify the solar system. If the electric rate would rise dramatically - that would also justify the solar system.

If we installed a swimming pool with an electric heat pump - our electric bill would more than double.
