Big Bend - Florida's Forgotten Coast - Minutes From Tallahassee

Lulu at Shell Point

Spring Creek Restaurant

We live in Tallahassee - we have a Roadtrek Camper. Just 28 miles south of our home is The Big Bend. This is the area on the Florida Gulf Coast where is turns from north and south to east and west. The largest beach town is an hour west - Apalachee - about 2300 people.

Last night Lulu and I had an impromptu date. After an hour of riding our electric bikes - we hopped into the camper and went for supper. Spring Creek Restaurant is in the middle of nowhere. It is named for an underwater spring flowing into the bay here - Spring Creek. It is a fisherman's paradise. The NY Times did a review on this restaurant - and Lulu likes the seafood there. After supper - we drove a few miles to Shell Point. This is a tiny seaport on the Gulf that has been refurbished using some of the BP Oil Spill money.

If you go west from here - the white sand beaches are the nicest in the world - all the way to Pensacola - 200 miles. Here the bottom is a little muddy from sediments coming down the rivers. Still Shell Point is a wonderful sitting and walking beach.

Our camper is Lulu's favorite beach cabana. It has a toilet - shower - hot water - and a cold frig. The king bed is very useful too.

We left home at 5 PM - and were back in the driveway at 9 PM. Just a nice night living on The Big Bend.

Refurbed Beach - nice parking lot

The Gulf and a new playground.

Row of condos on the harbor
