Day 6 - The Last Tree To Go

A policeman dropped by to watch the big pine tree along the road go down. He never saw a loader drop one like that. The officer said he just had 6 trees removed from his yard - he said it took forever - made lots of noise - and he still has stumps. He liked our way better.

We have almost completed site preparation. Today we took down the last tree that we are going to remove. It was a pine tree about 100 feet tall and about 20 inches around. It was right next to the street so we had to be careful.

In the past I have removed the trees with a chain saw. It is a lot of work - a lot of noise - and you are still left with a stump. Using an excavator is best way to go. It is quiet - fast - and also gets rid of the stumps. This excavator is capable of lifting 34 tons. It handles these large pine trees like cord wood.  No need for a chain saw to take off the branches. Just by shaking a log and/or twisting it on the ground breaks off all branches. They use a saw just to cut it into 16 foot lengths for the saw mill. These pines will be used mostly to make plywood - maybe some pine flooring. The brick house that we tore down had all pine board sheeting on the roof - 1 x 12 inch planks.

The ground was muddy from all the rain we are having. I try to keep the site clean but some mud was dragged onto the street by trucks. I get the pressure washer out every now and then - to clean up.

The logs are all stacked up - ready to go to the mill.

Tomorrow the bulldozer will come to grade the property. The land has a slight pitch from the back to the front. There is a drop of about 10 feet from back to front - over the distance of 250 feet - about a 4% grade.

The bull dozer will create flat spots for the house - the garage - yard - pool - etc.

I have lost count of the number of loads of house - concrete - and trees that were taken away. We took out about 10 big trees - with 20 trees of various sizes that we will keep.

Gary is champing at the bit - excited to lay out the foundation. Probably Wednesday or Thursday.
