Caterham Announced Today - They Are Building An Exciting New Sportscar

You may re-call that last summer I visited the town of Caterham - south of London - the home of the Caterham sports car. They build a super light car with performance that will beat a Chevrolet Corvette on a road course. The car is assembled at the factory in Dartford east of London. They are most commonly powered by a 4 cylinder Ford engine. They can be purchased in all levels of tune - up to 280 HP in the 1100 pound car - that is a ratio of less than 4 pounds per horsepower.

Here is the news release that I received this morning. It appears they are going to design a completely new car - I am hoping you will be able to import it into the USA through normal channels.

Joint Venture with Renault kick‐starts expansion plans for the niche brand
Caterham DNA of “accessible fun” to be taken to new economic growth markets
Project brings together Caterham F1 Team, Caterham Composites and Caterham Technology & Innovation UK‐built iconic Seven to remain core product for Caterham Cars.

Caterham Cars, producer of the iconic Seven, today announced advanced plans to produce a bold new sportscar that will signal its future ambitions and lay the foundations for an expansive product family that will deliver ‘accessible fun’ to new markets.
As the brand looks to build on nearly 40 years of evolving the UK‐designed and built, lightweight Seven two‐seater, and most recently the SP/300.R sports prototype trackday car, the all‐new everyday sportscar will be a product of a joint‐ venture engineering project with Renault.
The model will form the first phase of an ambitious development plan for Caterham Cars as it capitalises on the global footprint enjoyed by the parent Caterham Group, which now includes Caterham F1 Team, Caterham Technology & Innovation and Caterham Composites.
The new sportscar will be built in Dieppe, France, benefitting from the plant’s volume manufacturing capability. Production of the Seven, SP/300.R and forthcoming Caterham Kart will remain in the UK (Dartford, Kent), alongside the engineering expertise and facilities of Caterham F1 Team (Leafield, Oxfordshire) and Caterham Technology & Innovation (Hingham, Norfolk), which specialises in advanced concepts, lightweight structures, enhanced powertrains, control systems, advanced materials and manufacturing technologies.
Upon launch, the new model would feature the complementary expertise of partners Renault, Renault Sport Technologies and Caterham Technology & Innovation to deliver a truly global product.
Caterham Cars enjoys a unique place in the hearts of motoring enthusiasts, with iconic variants of the Seven, like the R500 Superlight, being a respected benchmark for performance and handling. Today, more than 55% of the Company’s annual production is exported to over 26 countries including France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.
