Lulu is speaking at the New Jersey Association of School Librarians Convention. It is being held in Long Branch NJ. It is about as far north as you can go - and still be on the Jersey Shore. Across the waters on the picture looking left - you can barely see the New York City Skyline.
We are on the 10th floor of Ocean Place with a balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It is probably a hopping place in the summer - but right now the beach is empty. I do see 4 surfers down the beach - taking advantage of the storm induced waves.
Just down the beach from Long Branch is Asbury Park and Ocean Grove. In the 1950s - my grandparents used to spend a week every summer at Ocean Grove attending "church camp." I re-call one time in 1956 my parents taking us to Asbury Park for a weekend at the shore. Bruce Springsteen cut his teeth playing dance halls all along these shore towns.
Nor far from here - the famous Hindenberg Airship crashed on the beach at Lakehurst in 1937. Some folks thing the fire was caused by sabotage.
