Not A Fortnight in Majorca - But Two Crazy Nights

The cathedral at Palma

Our short flight to  Majorca cost $34 total - Norwegian Air
Sometimes it is really funny why you pick a place to visit. For the last 10 years I have been looking for an excuse to go to Majorca - Mallorca - Maiorca - they are all the same place - just spelled differently by different countries. Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It has mountains - palm trees - and one very large city - Palma. The British and Germans love to come here for sunny long holidays.

My favorite play is Billy Elliot - about a coal miner’s son who wants to learn ballet. In the play - the British coal miners are on strike. The mine police and the miners are singing a union song back and forth at each other. It rang a bell for me because my Dad was a striking miner - and I was a striking teacher. The mine police are teasing the miners to keep the strike going because the police were making plenty of extra overtime money. They sing -

Keep it up till Christmas lads,
It means a lot to us
We send our kids to private school.
On a private bus

We've got a lot to thank you for
Geordie you're a corker
A nice extension on the house and a fortnight in Maiorca
Solidarity, solidarity
Solidarity forever

The Brits need all the sunshine they can get - and Majorca is really popular during the summer season. The airport is huge and hosts 24 million travelers a year. In the summer months - it is as busy as Heathrow and Gatwick. Our flight from Barcelona was barely in the air before we were getting ready to land. Since we were going to be in Valencia Spain - this was a perfect time killer. The cost to come out here was $34 each on Norwegian Air. At this time of the year - the airport is like a ghost town.

Instead of a fortnight in Majorca - we will spend two nights in downtown Palma - along with the other 400,000 residents here. We walked the sunny streets today - it reached 73 degrees. It the sun it seemed much hotter than that - and in the shade it was chilly. The Med Sea water is cold - we may walk the beach tomorrow - but I doubt we will enter the water. You never know with Lulu.

Lulu got a very nice 4 start hotel for $110 a night. It includes a giant buffet breakfast that will be my tomorrow's story. Even the mini-bar drinks in the room are on the house. We have an 8th floor balcony. It only has one tiny little elevator - it is right outside our room for quick access. Maybe 4 people can squeeze in it.

We had lunch at an Italian Restaurant and an afternoon drink at a British pub. The streets could be anywhere in Madrid - Venice - Rome - Paris - with cute little shops - and high end fashion stores.

We rented a car for tomorrow and plan to drive out in the countryside. When flying over the island - we saw plenty of cute little roads and hedgerows just like the English countryside. An Enterprise car for a day was 42 euros total. They drive on the right side of the road here - so it should be easy to get around.

Day 3 - Flying to the Island of Majorca

This was our hotel in Barcelona for 75 euros.

The hotel had a beautiful pool.

It is Friday morning at 9 AM - we are at the airport in Barcelona waiting for our flight to the Island of Majorca. We are flying on Norwegian Airlines for a total of $68 for two of us. I slept from 11 PM  to 7 AM and feel pretty good. We had breakfast in bed - got our showers - and caught the hotel shuttle to the airport.

It is overcast today and in the high 50s. According to the Koppen Climate System - they have a Mediterranean climate here - similar to Southern California. This morning after our showers - we noticed that your hair dries very fast here. A neat feature I never saw before was the heated mirror in the bathroom. It never fogs up!

We slept last night with the windows open - no screens - and the heat and AC off. The window was about 5 feet tall and maybe 7 feet wide. It hinged inward - and you could have it wide open or any step in between. Spain does not have a lot of fossil fuels - so energy is expensive. In order for the appliances to work in your room - you must insert your room key in a wall slot. When you leave the room - it shuts off everything. Gasoline at first appears cheap at 1.2 euros until you figure out that is for a liter which is about a quart. Doing the math - that is roughly $5 a gallon. Even at that rate - there are more and more large vehicles and SUV’s. The Mercedes bus that brought us to the airport was a diesel and it had a 6 speed manual transmission. What a really nice bus for 20 people.

The flight to Palma - Majorca - Spain - is 55 minutes. It is funny to be flying on a Norwegian Airline between two cities in Spain. We went through security easily - we are waiting at the gate now. We did not show a passport yet for ID. We have our tickets on our iPhones - so we just showed them.

It is great having use of your iPhones - not as much for calls - we can call each other - but for use of the computer features. We are paying 10 euros for 1 GB of data service. When we are on wifi - we can watch our TV from home. If we would do that on our data plan here - it would eat up all our data in a few shows. We simply took out our ATT simm chips and replaced them with Vodafone chips. The iPhone maps are a godsend when walking over here and using public transportation. All of a sudden you know where you are going.

It is 9:45 AM. We are sitting in a lobby in the airport - waiting for our flight at 11 AM. We have free wifi so I will post this story - and Lulu can enjoy her coffee.

Walking Around in Barcelona

Today we spent 5 hours touring Barcelona. Tomorrow we fly to Majorca.

We landed in Barcelona about 10 AM their time. We were pretty tired and Lulu had a great hotel close to the airport for us to unwind. We napped for a few hours and then took a bus downtown.,

The Barcelona Art Museum sits high on a hill - with a very impressive view of the town. We hiked up there in the dark. It was closed but it provides a wonderful view of the city.

Built in 1929 - the Barcelona Art Museum features Catalonia Art. Catalonia was at one time its own country - all the way up to the Spanish Civil War.

We stopped in the mall connected to our hotel. Vodafone gave us 1 GB phone chips for $10 each. they even loaded them into our phones and got us online. That is a lot of work for a measly $10.

View of Barcelona from the art museum

This was a bull fighting arena. Then they gutted it and made a shopping mall.

This is the inisde of the Bull Ring Mall.

In the bull ring mall downtown.

On top of the  bull fight arena is a ring of restaurants. We had a nice supper of tapas - several ala carte main courses. We had sausages - breaded fried olives - salads - etc. Prices are low - 5 entries - 2 beers - 29 euros.

The government area including the Barcelona Congress.

We took the local bus from this plaza back to our hotel - about 5 miles.

A dog walk area from the top of the arena.

A central park in Barcelona.

Sagrada Família

designed by Antoni Gaudi. They started in 1882 - it is suppose to be done by 2028. The spend $25 million a year in private funds to build it. This was taken form miles away on top of the arena. We visited it 2 years ago. It is one of the most impressive buildings I have seen. It is not my style - but it is amazing.

See our visit to the cathedral here -

We enjoyed sunset in the city onto of the bull fight arena.

Day 2 - Landed Safely in Barcelona Spain

This morning we woke up to sun on
the snow covered Pyrenee Mountains.

We left our home in Tallahassee at 11 AM. Our flight was 1 PM but we did not want to be held up going through Security. We were the only ones in line so that was fast. We each carried one bag and had a backpack. That was all the security we saw until Barcelona.

The flights to Atlanta and then to New York City were full but landed on time. We had a nice flight from NYC to Barcelona. It left JFK Airport at 8 PM - we had supper in the air and went to sleep. We awoke to the Pyrenee Mountains in Spain. We had a tailwind so the flight was only 7 hours. Our Boeing 767 - was very smooth the whole way. We had facemasks on and slept through the breakfast they offered.

Barcelona has a big new airport. We went through customs in a blink. They asked no questions - just stamped our passport and away we went. Lulu had booked a hotel near the airport with a free shuttle. So now we are in our hotel room relaxing. It is clear and sunny here - in the low 60s. There is a McDonalds next to our hotel - so I got something to eat. They had a machine there that squeezed whole oranges for your drink. It took about 4 oranges per cup of juice. Lulu needed her black coffee to start the day.

We will tour around the city a little bit today. Tomorrow - we catch a Norwegian Air flight to Majorca. The flight cost is $68 total for 2 people. Majorca is Spain's biggest island - it is about 200 miles from here. We will stay in the city of Palma in Majorca. It is not small - about 400,000 people.

Majorca is a popular vacation spot for people from Germany and England. We have a hotel for two nights in Majorca - then we fly to Valencia Spain. We will be there for 5 days. Lulu has a conference there. Also - FSU has a campus in Valencia. We have visited the FSU campuses in London and Florence Italy. We have not visited the 4th one yet in Panama.

I am a little tired - so I am going to rest now. These pictures were taken with my iPhone.

I am guessing this is Igualada

Barcelona Airport is huge.
You can see the Med. Sea in the back.
This McDonalds Cafe squeezed
each glass of orange juice fresh.
I am guessing they are
Valencia oranges.

69th Birthday With Friends and Family

This is what 69 looks like. Curled over -
drooling over ice cream
Carl is a radio expert. Here he is among the radios
at the DeVoe Moore Museum

Over 200 perfectly restored cars - including a
Tucker - and 2 GT 40 Fords.

Lulu loved this 1956 Chevy Nomad with suitcase.
69 is a big number for me. It was in the Summer of 69 that I was a life guard at the Bungalow Pool in Tamaqua - where I met a 15 year old girl in a bikini. I asked her out on a date to a concert in Woodstock NY. Mother Betty did not let her go - but I came home and told Lulu all about it. She was amused and 2 years later we eloped to Miami Beach and spent the summer there. We returned to Tamaqua in the fall.

Monday was my 69th birthday. I officially retired 14 years ago on my 55th. My lovely wife Lulu has made the last 14 years the best of my life. When you are old and senile - the last day is the best day - and the last people you meet are the best. People are very forgiving of your faults.

The best present was when Carl and Marylou Zimmerman chose to drive up from Tampa to spend a few days with us. We had so much fun. We went to a basketball game - the car museum - the Tallahassee Museum - shopping in Thomasville GA - and sausage sandwiches at Bradley's Country Store in Georgia.

Monday started out with a before game supper with George - Joel - Joan - Carl - Marylou - Lulu and me. Lulu made a big pot of German brats. Then we had my favorite lava cake with ice cream. This was followed by the FSU girls pounding visiting Miami.

A real highlight was a visit to Devoe Moore's Auto Museum. Besides giving Florida State $50 million - DeVoe loves old cars - and has a shop on the premises that does full restorations. The collection also includes a diverse collection of radios - boat motors - dolls - farm tools - toys - motorcycles - knives - you name it. For $15 - you can enjoy until your eyes glaze over.

I have already lived 3 years beyond my Dad. I feel healthier than ever. We do not know when our time is up - but I feel like I am in the gun lap. Lulu has us going 100 miles per hour - things are flying by.

Our next adventure is March 1st to March 19th. We will be in Spain then circling the Mediterranean Sea on a cruise. We will be in Barcelona Spain - Valencia Spain - Majorca Spain - Marseille France - Savona Italy - Naples Italy - Palermo Sicily - and finally Malta. We hope you follow along on this webpage - and I hope I can keep up with Lulu. I carry her bags.

Basketball Right Behind Clemson Bench

Noles won 109 - 61. It was their largest ACC victory margin ever.

We sat right behind Clemson's bench. They sold 10,500 tickets - but there were plenty of empty seats.  We paid $20 each for the tickets outside. We could  have gotten in for $5 a piece - but paid extra for the nice seats.

Monday night our girls play Miami ay 7 PM. Carl and Marylou Zimmerman will go to that game with us.

FSU Seminoles Ranked Number 6 In Football Recruiting

From the Daily Note.

The letters of intent are in, the signatures are on the dotted lines, and everything has largely wrapped up for National Signing Day 2017. Not surprisingly, Florida State finished with yet another top class, signing 24 players to finalize a sixth place national ranking.
Fans typically don’t get to know everything about every recruit, but we at The Daily Nole attempt to do so. This year we bring back one of our fun pieces from last Signing Day, where we attempt to hand out superlatives to various members of the 2017 recruiting class. Find out who we chose this year:

Most Likely to Contribute Next Year

Cam Akers, RB
The best player in the class is also the most likely to contribute in 2017. Akers comes into a backfield that has one proven player (Jacques Patrick) and a group of unknowns. One of these unknowns is technically Akers, but his skill set is so impressive that he’s almost certainly going to be getting major reps by the end of the year. Barring any injury or off-the-field troubles, Akers will be active from the start of the very first game.
Runner-ups: Bailey Hockman, Adonis Thomas

Most Likely to Switch Positions

DeCalon Brooks, LB
Many forgot that Derrick Brooks’ son was in the class, mostly due to his very early commitment date (Aug. 8). Brooks is a low 3-star that would not be a take in usual classes, but he still provides interesting options for the FSU staff. He is listed as an inside linebacker, but he simply does not have the size FSU looks for in the linebacking corps, weighing in at just 5-11 and 197 pounds. Brooks will likely shift to the secondary, where he has a good chance of playing roles like the “Money” or “Star” positions that are present in the current defensive scheme. He likely won’t see the field for another year, but he could turn into a steal if developed properly.
Some would have put Hamsah Nasirildeen here, but he’s technically an athlete who could play multiple positions. Brooks fit the letter of the name better.
Runner-ups: Hamsah Nasirildeen, Tre Lawson

Most Likely to Redshirt

Tre Lawson, DE
Everyone knew when Lawson committed that he was a project. FSU defensive ends coach Brad Lawing is a fantastic coach who has proven he can get the most out of his players. If he thinks a prospect has potential, it’s best to trust his judgement. Lawson is 6-6 and 240 pounds, and his highlight tape shows how strong he is at the point of attack. He still needs to refine his technique and fill out his frame before he is ready to contribute. He could conceivably get converted into a defensive tackle if the staff likes how he progresses there. Regardless, taking a redshirt is his best course of action for Lawson at this point.
Runner-ups: James Blackman, DeCalon Brooks

Best Chance at Winning the Heisman Trophy

Cam Akers, RB
Don’t put too much stock into this superlative as last year’s winner was quarterback Malik Henry, but it’s still interesting to debate. The Heisman Trophy has largely become a quarterback-running back award, so whoever is the most talented of the offensive commits is likely getting the nod. Cam Akers fills this role pretty well. He has arrived in Tallahassee as a better player than Dalvin Cook was at the same point. If he lives up to his potential, he’s going to be the unquestioned starter by the time he’s a sophomore.
Runner-ups: Khalan Laborn, James Blackman

Most Underrated

Adonis Thomas, LB
Thomas appears as a 3-star junior college recruit in Florida State’s listing. But when he was coming out of high school, Thomas was a 4-star linebacker and a top 200 overall player. He still has the prototype size of an inside linebacker, and he was good enough that Alabama offered and signed him the first time around. Thomas is going to immediately compete for playing time and will likely be seeing rotation early in the season. Florida State has a lot of talent in the linebacking unit, and Thomas will be yet another impressive addition.
Runner-ups: Tamorrion Terry, Zaquandre White

The Biggest Unknown

Ontaria Wilson, CB
There still exists some debate around the reasoning for extending a scholarship to Wilson. He had very little exposure prior to Florida State discovering him, and many still think that he was given a scholarship solely because of his more well-known teammate, Tamorrion Terry. But after reading about Wilson and looking at his tape, he does seem like the type of player that simply got overlooked — mainly because he didn’t particularly focus on getting his name out there. He’s a lengthy cornerback who has enough athleticism to turn into a starter at the next level. It will still be interesting to see how he pans out when practice begins and if he takes a redshirt or not.
Runner-ups: Tamorrion Terry, Tre Lawson

Costco Offers An Excellent Entry Level Electric Bike

While visiting Costco yesterday - I stumbled onto a very nice electric bike.

I own an electric car - had a golf cart - electric scooters - and another electric bike. As you get older - having a motor to assist you along makes a lot of sense.

Simply - this bike has a 250 watt electric motor and an 8 amp hour battery. It powers the bike at about 20 MPH for 20 miles. You can pedal along and go farther - or turn the motor off and just pedal.

The bike is on sale for $1200 - normally $1500. Electric bikes can be purchased with high price tags -some over $10,000. The GenZe bike is made by Mahindra - a large firm in India. Parts and service are available. There are good reviews on youtube.

The bike only weighs 47 pounds with battery. It would be easy for lifting onto car racks or into campers. The battery can removed from the frame with a key. If one drove the bike to work - they could charge their battery in the office - protecting it from crooks. The lithium battery is a big part of the price.

I am tempted to buy 2. Lulu says she would drive it to work. There are protected bikes paths from our house to her office. She can't go on them with her scooter.

Spring Time in Florida - Turns A Man's Fancy to Campers

Lulu and I were going to lunch and a little shopping at Costco. As we were parking - we noticed this cute little truck camper parked by a construction site. We stopped the car to take a few pictures - hoping the owner would notice us - and maybe we could get the story. No luck.

I am guessing a carpenter made it from scratch. It looked custom. I did not get the story yet - but in Mom's world - the guy works on the building project and lives far away. He stays in the camper on weekdays - and goes home to his family on weekends. It is all an assumption. At any rate - it is a nice truck and truck camper. I doubt that it has much plumbing or heat.

Lulu loves to watch those "tiny house" TV shows. We were ahead of our time.We lived for 30 years in 1000 square feet in Tamaqua PA.
