International Tribunal Court - Nuremburg

This is the box where the war criminal sat
This is the court house

United States - Russia - France - England decided to have an international court to charge the Nazi leaders with war crimes. A few of the leaders - like Hitler and Himmler chose to kill themselves rather than stand trial. 21 Nazi leaders stood trial - 12 were hung in the prison next door. Others received sentences and lived to be free men. Three were found not guilty.

This was the first time heads of state were tried and held accountable for war crimes.

Germany was divided into 4 sections - each one ruled over by one of the above countries. They were eventually joined back into one country - Germany - again. The capital city of Berlin - was divided into 4 sections. Russia built a wall around their section - because everyone was trying to escape from there. After 45 years - the wall was torn down by the people. Germany has since risen back to be one of the world's top 4 economic powers.

A bus tour was there - and they had
a good English guide. We listened.

A view from the third floor gallery.

In 1945 - Walter Chronkite - covered
the trial for - Stars and Stripes.

This was the prison out back. The gym
where they were hanged has been torn down.
