Tallahassee Bus Boycott - 60th Anniversary

Fred Lee - It's Been A Long Time Coming

It seems like it was just yesterday in the news - students being arrested for NOT sitting in the back of the bus. 60 years ago today - two girls from Florida A&M University refused to go to the back of the bus. They were arrested. This started a massive boycott that put the bus line out of business. Today - 90% of the bus drivers are black - and you can sit wherever you want.

Still - in Tallahassee - there is a big economic divide. The Northeast is mostly white folks - the Southside is mostly black people. The mayor of Tallahassee is black as well as many member of town council. FSU is still 90% white and FAMU is 90% black. We have come a long way - but we have a long way to go
