Reichstag - We Toured The German Capitol At Night

The Reichstag

If you want to go up into the dome of the Reichstag - you must make a reservation. You also must present your passport. Lulu made reservations - so last Thursday night we made the tour.

The Reichstag was originally built in the 1800s. In 1933 - the interior was burnt out and Hitler seized the opportunity to gain power and reduce opposition. In 1945 - when the Soviets captured Berlin - they butchered the building and since the building was in East Berlin - it laid dormant from 1945 until 1990. When the wall went down and Germany became one country again - the people voted to renovate the Reichstag and have their congress meet there again.

A new dome was constructed out of glass. On the tour - you can go in the dome and look down on the law making body. Today - Germany has the 4th largest economy in the world.

The train station from the Reichstag dome.
The Brandenburg Gate from the dome.

There is a hole in the top of the dome where
rain and snow come in.

After the Reichstag tour - we caught the tram home.
